What to Do the First Week After You Move In

You’ve made it—moving day is behind you! But now what? The first week in your new home is all about settling in, getting organized, and laying the foundation for a smooth transition. Here’s a simple checklist to guide you through it.

1. Unpack the Essentials First

Start with the “essentials” box you (hopefully) packed ahead of time. This should include:

  • Toiletries
  • Bedding
  • Basic kitchen supplies
  • Medications
  • Chargers & electronics

Once your day-to-day necessities are out, you’ll feel more at home.

2. Inspect Your New Home

Before getting too cozy:

  • Check for any damages or maintenance issues
  • Make sure utilities like electricity, water, and gas are working properly
  • Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Locate your circuit breaker and water shut-off valve

3. Change the Locks

If you’re renting or buying a home, it’s a good idea to change the locks or get them rekeyed. You never know who might still have a copy of the old keys.

4. Update Your Address

Notify these services and contacts:

  • USPS (change-of-address form)
  • Banks & credit cards
  • Insurance providers
  • DMV
  • Friends & family
  • Subscription services (Amazon, streaming platforms, etc.)

5. Get to Know the Neighborhood

Take a walk or drive around:

  • Find the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, gas station, and post office
  • Check out local restaurants, coffee shops, and parks
  • Say hello to a neighbor or two—it’s a great way to start feeling like part of the community

6. Set Up Internet & Utilities

If you haven’t already, get your internet, cable, and any remaining utilities set up. Do it early—you’ll thank yourself when it’s time to unwind with Netflix.

7. Start Small with Unpacking

Don’t feel like you need to unpack everything right away. Tackle one room at a time, starting with high-use areas like the kitchen and bedroom.

8. Begin Personalizing Your Space

Hang up a few pictures. Light a candle. Put out your favorite throw blanket. These small touches can help make the space feel truly yours.

Moving is a process, not just a day. But by taking these steps during your first week, you’ll set yourself up for a smooth, comfortable start in your new home.
